The Laughing Feather

The Laughing Feather
The Laughing Feather is one of my most favourite activities to do with children. I recieved this beautiful feather stick on holiday in Vanuatu. We were on the island of Tanna and visited a village of Ni Vanuatu who put on special show for us. One of these amazingly beautiful people put this feather stick in my hair. I declared it at customs and was so happy when they let me bring it home. I used it as a laughing feather recently with a group of kindergarten children. I told them where I got it from and said that Vanuatu was voted the happiest place in the world (true). I told them that it had special powers to make people laugh and feel happy (not particularly true) and that when the feather is raised it makes people laugh out loudly  and when it is lowered people will stop laughing. I tested the feathers powers and to my delight all of the children started laughing loudly and whole heartedly. It was a beautiful sight and sound. When I lowered the feather the children stopped laughing. I repeated the up and down of motion of the feather many times and the children laughed and stopped laughing right on cue.

Laughter is the best medicine for reducing stress. My profile picture was taken about 7 years ago when I was using the laughing feather (pictured below) with my daughter, son, niece and nephew. I love to share knock, knock jokes with children as well. They laugh even if they don’t get it and especially love making up their own, which usually don’t make sense but are hilarious none the less.

I bought this feather at Spot light is has the same effect but not the ‘true story’ of Vanuatu. Find a feather and try it with a group of children, it’s a blast!!!!!!
